This was one of my most time-consuming paintings because of the amount of fur and mane detail required. Like all of my paintings, they start with just the basic drawing, no detail is needed in the first stage because that comes when overlaying the fur on the block in colour.
The blurry background was created by the use of my airbrush and diluted shades of green with a touch of orange mixed in. After the basic colour blocking I started work on the fine hair of the Lion's body working slowly up to his mane. The next stage was to detail the Lion's face and start work on the cub. Finally completing the cub and the Lions front paws. The final stage was to add a grassy foreground and brush in their whiskers.
African Lion Pride Facts:
A male can live up to 10 years, but there are fewer than 20,000 left in the wild. When cubs are born the female will keep them in a den for around 10 weeks, then introduce them to the pride. The male will guard the cubs while the female is out hunting.
