Male Lion

Updated: Oct 5

I wanted to paint a detailed portrait of an old male African Lion showing the scars from a life of remaining the head of the pride. The first stage after the usual basic sketch was to fill the canvas adding a rough background. For the second coat on the background, I mixed the colours using an Acrylic slow drying medium which would give me enough time to blur the background colours before the paint dried. To achieve the blur, I used a 1” Acrylic paintbrush.

The next stage was to work on the fur on his face, lining in where his scars would be across his nose. Next using a Rigger paintbrush and a lot of single brush strokes I completed his mane.

The final stages were to complete the fine fur of his mane on top of his head, ears, and whiskers.

African Lion Facts:

Only slightly smaller than the Amur tiger, the lion is the second largest big cat. Male lions can grow up to 10 feet in length and weigh up to 550 pounds. A lion's roar can be heard up to 5 miles away. This is a warning to other predators and to protect their territory from competing males, also to attract mating partners.
