Snow Leopard & Cubs

Updated: Oct 5, 2024

This painting has been a technical challenge and the most detailed painting to date. Using the same technique of a pencil drawing and starting to work out the background. As you can see through the stages I have been changing my mind with the rock formation. The longest process had been to create a frosty snow-covered landscape and to achieve this I had to apply thousands upon thousands of white dots on the pale blue snow. To achieve the wet-looking fur, I used a small rigger brush to make the normally fine dry fur pointed into small clumps.

Snow Leopard

Snow Leopard Fact:

Living in Asia and Eurasia their population in the wild has now declined to between 4000 and 6500. They live anywhere from 10 to 13 years and are more closely related to the Tiger than to the Leopard.

After breeding the male leaves, while the female is responsible for finding a safe place to have and raise her cubs. At birth, they weigh only 11 to 25 ounces and are much darker than their mother. They have Large paws with fur on the bottom to protect and cushion their feet on the rocky terrain and also provide traction in the snow. The short well-developed front legs and long thicktail help with balance when climbing.
